Alfred Marshall

Chapter Organizer | New Orleans

Alfred is from New Orleans and grew up in the projects known as Brick City. It was really a village where people looked out for each other. He was raised by the Black Panther Party, who taught him that when something’s broken you have to fix it. At the age of 17, he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced. Inside the prison, he took that life lesson and organized with other young men to form a library, and they won. The incarcerated men now had access to books to educate themselves. Coming back into society, he saw the many other needs of his community on the outside. He began to organize for employment opportunities and was able to secure jobs for 50 young men. Among the many accomplishments in Alfred’s organizing career, he has worked on national housing campaigns, local warrant clinics, and with VOTE to Ban the Box. While Alfred could make change locally with his New Orleans community, he recognized that the city can only do so much. In his role with VOTE, Alfred's goal is to fight for state-wide change.
